ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

ASHE Welcome and update
Skanda Skandaverl, CHFM, FASHE, director Region Eight, director of facilities management and construction at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kans. Skanda holds a diploma in electrical engineering, a bachelor’s degree in management, and master’s in business administration. He became a Certified Healthcare Facility Manger (CHFM) in 2004, was awarded the title of Senior Member of ASHE in 2006, and became a Fellow Member (FASHE) in 2009. He serves on the ASHE board of directors and as Vice Chair on the education committee.

Hospital for a Healthy Environment (H2E) technical session review
Conference technical committee co-chair will provide a brief overview of the technical sessions offered through the day.
Nancy Larson , director of the K-State Pollution Prevention Institute and the Kansas Small Business Environmental Assistance Program. Nancy has worked with K-State for more than 10 years and has more than 25 years experience in the environmental and public health  arena.  Nancy has worked with hospitals for several years and serves as co-chair of the conference technical sessions.


Sustainability Empowerment - Boulder Community Hospital case study
Learn how Boulder Community Hospital's sustainability journey might help you begin your own efforts. 
Kai Abelkis, sustainability coordinator,  Boulder Community Hospital. Kai  has been an outspoken advocate for implanting sustainable practices in the health care industry.  Kai is part of a growing choir of folks who believe that environmental health promotes community health.


Introduction to Lean Operations
This session will provide an introduction to lean operations in healthcare.
Dr. David Ben-Arieh, Professor, Dept. of Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering is a Professor of Industrial Engineering at Kansas State University. His industrial experience includes working for AT&T Bell Laboratories, and consulting for the aerospace industry and NASA. In recent years Dr. Ben-Arieh has focused on applications in Health Care Systems Management, including patients flow, information systems integration, and patient quality and safety improvements.

Tim Adams, FASHE, CHFM, CHC, works with the American Hospital Association. He is a Member Professional Development Director in the areas including: education, codes, standards and accreditation, facilities management, emergency management, health care construction, medical technology.

Update from EPA Region 7
Jim Callier, Branch Manager, Resource Conservation and Pollution Prevention Section, EPA R7. Jim Callier is the manager of the Resource Conservation and Pollution Prevention Section.  Jim was recently appointed to this position after completing a 4 year to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands where he served as the Special Assistant to the Director of the Division of Environmental Quality.  Jim has over twenty five years of experience working at EPA, primarily in Region 7.

 

Sustainability Roadmap for Hospitals, an AHA guide to achieving your sustainability goals
This new resource is designed to help hospitals understand the complex issues of sustainability and identify the unique drivers to implement customized programs like energy reduction, water conservation, waste minimization and/or resource conservation through the supply chain.
Laura Brannen, Associate of Materials & Waste Management Strategies at M&NLB.  Laura has been working in healthcare for over 20 years with a focus on reducing the environmental footprint of our nation’s hospitals.  Her experience is grounded in using practical and collaborative approaches to making lasting change.  Prior to joining Mazzetti, she was the Director of Customer Sustainability at WM Healthcare Solutions and was the founding Executive Director of Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E).


Energy Savings:  The Foundation of Going Green in Healthcare
What does a good energy management program look like? High performance organizations adopt a structured approach to energy management and establish policies and procedures needed to ensure long-term results.  This session will help you assess the strengths and weaknesses of your energy management program, and offers guidance on institutionalizing continuous energy savings in your hospital.
Clark Reed, director of the healthcare facilities division for ENERGY STAR, at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C.   He has responsibility for building and delivering key tools and resources to increase energy savings at healthcare facilities across the nation.  He leads EPA's effort to establish and maintain energy rating systems for healthcare and senior care spaces.

David Carter, pollution prevention and energy specialist with K-State. David has 20-plus years experience with environmental regulations and is experienced in air quality permits, wastewater, storm water, hazardous and solid waste regulations, environmental permits, and environmental management systems (ISO 14001). He is an AEE-Certified Energy Manager and RABQSA-certified ISO14001 Auditor.

Ryan Hamel, pollution prevention and energy specialist with K-State.  Ryan has a B.S. in biological and agricultural engineering and works from a Kansas City office. Ryan works with the team to provide multimedia compliance and P2 technical assistance to Kansas businesses. 

Dedriel Newsome, Environmental Engineer for US EPA Region 7.  Her degree is a BS in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University.  She has worked for EPA Region 7 for approximately 24 years.  She has been a RCRA inspector for approximately 22 years.  During those 22 years, she has conducted over 500 RCRA inspections at a variety of industrial and commercial facilities that generate hazardous waste, including hospitals. 

Jennifer Reutzel, Iowa Pollution Prevention Services. Jennifer has 7 years experience providing technical assistance to Iowa business and industry through both the Iowa DNR’s Solid Waste Alternatives Program and the Iowa Pollution Prevention Services program.  Jennifer has degrees in Environmental Science, Economics and Chemistry, and an MS in Economics with an Environmental Economics focus.

Jeff Fiagle, Team Leader, Pollution Prevention Services, IDNR. Jeff has eighteen years professional experience in environmental assistance programs. He coordinates budget and activities of the team and serves as Chair of the Region 7 P2 Roundtable. Jeff has a B.S. Landscape Architecture.


Cutting costs through facility management
A panel of hospital facility managers representing several states and different size hospitals will present top tips for cutting costs through facility management.

Tracy Robinson, CPM, Southwest Medical Center, Liberal, Kansas. For the past 14 years Tracy has worked with Southwest Medical Center, a 101 bed licensed county hospital, and represents rural healthcare facility management issues. He is very active with KHEA (Kansas Healthcare Engineers Associations) serving on the board, as program chair, and as President. Tracy also serves on the H2E conference technical advisory committee.  

Donald Futrell, CHFM, Executive Director of Facilities Management & Planning, Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. His role includes facilities management, planning, and other support services operations for this 600-bed, 4million square foot academic medical center. Don has been actively involved in Facilities Management for 30 years, serving in a variety of senior leadership roles at Loyola University Medical Center and The University of Chicago Hospitals in Chicago. He also served at Health Midwest and Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, and The University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Renee Jacobs, St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City, MO. Renée R. Jacobs’ current position as vice president of facilities and construction at Saint Luke’s Health System involves oversight of all areas of design, construction, renovation, master planning, and plant operations and maintenance for 11 Kansas City area hospitals. Most notably, Jacobs is overseeing completion of the “New Saint Luke’s,” Saint Luke’s Hospital’s $330 million multi-phase addition and renovation.

Rodger Glaus is the Director of Plant Operations for SSM Health Care St. Louis, North Operating Group.   He is responsible for facility management at 4 hospitals totaling over 2 million square feet.  Rodger has worked in Healthcare Engineering for over 30 years and is a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager.
